zee slipcover, she is done!

Phew! ::wipes brow:: it's done. And what's more, the page documenting it's being done, is done. *And*, I figured out how to really do domain subnames on my host (I don't think they had this ability when I signed up, found out about it by accident a while back) so took this opportunity to test:

slipcover.vrya.net

Visit the link above if you want to see what I've been up to all week....

Wow! That's incredible!!!

It doesn't look anything like a slipcover, it looks like it's just the couch!

Very, very, very impressive. Wow :)

And I noticed something interesting last night. The living room chair has piping cut on the straight of grain. Thought of you :P

Thanks!

It doesn't look anything like a slipcover, it looks like it's just the couch!

That's always my goal when I slipcover. If I wanted a floofy loosefitting thing, I'd just go get a bedspread and drape, after all. And after watching my mom upulster and reupulster my dad's tv chair every few years (she also did that great big couch in our living room, remember? that's why were never allowed to sit on it without blankets and such!) I'm entirely sold on the removeable-slipcover-which-can-be-laundered approach.

And I noticed something interesting last night. The living room chair has piping cut on the straight of grain. Thought of you :P<?I>

heh, heh. The piping on the couch itself was on the bias, which looked nice because it was twill, so the little lines twirl around. But with the jacquard, you wouldn't have been able to tell anyway, and I had no problem negotiating the curves that I wouldn't have had if I'd done the bias; the seat cushion corners were hard, but I think that's the nature of seat cushion corners! so thank you very much for enabling my corner-cutting measures ;-)

It's beautiful! Reading about your process was great fun, even though I'm not making any slipcovers in this lifetime. I now have a whole new appreciation for them, though, that's for sure.

Thanks! I'm always interested in seeing how things are put together myself, even if I have no intention of trying to replicate. It's just fun to see how raw materials become finished things. And since my memory is apparantly a seive, always a good thing to leave behind a papertrail ;-)

It looks excellent! Much better than the slipcover I made a few years ago, hehe. I'll be reading the whole page when I have more time tonight. I love the fabric you chose, it's lovely.

well, what's a good evil plan without detailed (if scribbly) plans? You should see all the pages I *didn't* post. These ones were the ones that might conceivably make sense to someone other than me. The rest... well, not so much!

very impressive. Love the cushions! You've got it all so perfect...I always used to pull at the fabric of my sewing projects, and it all got tensioned out of proportion. Hmmn.

Erm Quick question totally off-toppiccy...If , hypothetically, I was looking for some DVD-ripping software, what should I be looking for? Free virus-free downloads preferred, natch...

yeah well, if you got closer enough you'd see I pulled a bit here and there myself, especially around the corners, but fortunately it doesn't look too bad from a normal distance... that's the nice thing about basting first, if it gets too stretched, you can tell and fix it...

If , hypothetically, I was looking for some DVD-ripping softwar

well, hypothetically speaking, I believe a few people have hypothetically mentioned to me this program. I haven't actually tried it myself yet, as I'm trying to clear a good chunk of freetime (and get a few more seasons on DVD) before delving back into the vidding world, but I'm pretty sure that's the puppy to use. It's been a while, but I think tmpgenc has some extra tools that will convert vob files to regular mpegs. Also, if Ulead DVD Factory happened to come with your dvd-drive or with a capture card or something, that will also do it if you chose the "edit existing dvd" mode. (though you have to be clever, and go into its temp files and copy the temp mpegs it creates to another directory so they don't get erased when you close the program)

thanks! it looks a little less perfect when you get a little closer, but the prettiness of the fabric goes a long way to distract from that. which was the plan ;-)

I fell upon your beautiful slipcover today while surfing the web. I adore it! What a fabulous job you did! I'd love to try to make one, with the help of my daughter. (All those sewing lessons when she was a kid are paying off!)
I'm trying to find the fabric you used. They don't seem to have "venus" any longer. However, I did find the following, is it close? Is the price higher?
http://www.denverfabrics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=17820&Category_Code=DFVintage&Product_Count=32

Also, the couch I want to cover needs new cushions. Does anyone know where to buy cushions?

Again, your slipcover is great. And, thanks for sharing.

Please email me any info at msuma@sopris.net.

All best,
Mary

Wowww! great job! Thanks for doing all the leg work. They always make it look so easy on TV and in Reality (as you demostrated) it isn't. I am thinking about doing my couch, but now I may reconsider. Thanks for the step-by-step detail it was really helpful.

Hi. I am making my first slipcover and I really don't know how to sew or where even to begin. Thanks for putting this page on the internet. It's going to make making my slipcover so much easier than it would have been if I was just flying blind.

And in the category of the twilight zone . . . that is the exact machine I learned to sew on! It was my grandmother's and I loved it. I have never seen another one, but I am not surprised you managed to make a slipcover on it--it sews beautifully. I have a husqvarna now, but I keep the Elna around in case my other one needs a service or something.

I too was relieved to see you didn't cut all your piping on the bias--I was trying to find a way to cut that corner with some cushions I am making! Good to know it works in a pinch. :)
